THE MILK CARTON KIDS NOMINATED FOR BEST FOLK ALBUM GRAMMY AWARD
NEW RECORD I ONLY SEE THE MOON OUT NOW TO CRITICAL ACCLAIM ON FAR CRY RECORDS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THIRTY TIGERS
November 10, 2023—Critically acclaimed duo The Milk Carton Kids are nominated for “Best Folk Album” for their new record I Only See The Moon at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.
This marks the group’s fourth Grammy nomination. Their 2013 ANTI- Records debut The Ash & Clay proved their national breakthrough, earning the band a “Best Folk Album” nomination. They were nominated for “Best American Roots Performance” in 2015 for the track “The City of Our Lady” from their acclaimed third studio album Monterey, and 2018’s All The Things That I Did And All The Things That I Didn’t Do was nominated for “Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.”
I Only See The Moon is out now to critical acclaim on Far Cry Records in partnership with Thirty Tigers. Order/stream the album HERE, and see what the press has said about I Only See The Moon below:
“The Milk Carton Kids are known for a drollery that lands them gigs like sometimes hosting the Americana Music Honors & Awards, in-between their day jobs writing deeply haunting songs and delivering the most luscious male harmonies this side of S&G and the Everlys.”—Variety
New Music Friday: The Best Releases Out May 19—NPR Music
“It’s been four years since Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have put out a record together, but I Only See The Moon arrives with immaculate grace…It’s good to have them both back; I Only See The Moon signals a return to form for a beloved band.”—Paste
“A collection of songs bathed in warming eloquence and poetic nuance, with affecting lyrical passages telling of broken clocks and aging hearts, rising suns, their lunar counterparts and time slipping away graciously. There is humor, the brightness of hope and the dark candor of reality within these examinations of love and life—each, to Pattengale and Ryan’s satisfaction, is executed with a workman-like resolve.”—Relix
“With their exquisite new album, I Only See The Moon, and ambitious new Los Angeles Folk Festival, Milk Carton Kids Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan are leading a modern folk revival.”—Guitar Player
“their strongest set of songs to date”—Acoustic Guitar
“I Only See the Moon is a true album—each track knows about the other songs around it, gently pushing and pulling at their lyrical and instrumental angles...there are some moments of real beauty here. 9/10”—PopMatters
“[‘Running on Sweet Smile’ is a] thoughtful, acoustic guitar-driven song.”
—American Songwriter
“[‘When You’re Gone’ is] an earnest tale of a memory that refuses to leave while longing for days that have passed.”—The Boot
“The eleven-song effort eases out majestically around the duo’s vocal harmonies and light acoustic instrumentation…these songs touch on solitude, fading love, trying to grow up and some bleak topics, but their sweet sound together makes listening to them a joy.”
—Glide Magazine
“[‘Running On Sweet Smile’ is] direct in its lyrics, yet winding and exploratory in arrangement, highlighting the many strengths of the folk duo.”—The Bluegrass Situation
In addition to the new record, The Milk Carton Kids recently founded/co-produced the first ever Los Angeles Folk Festival in partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil) at The Ford this past October. The band headlined the festival alongside critically acclaimed artists Waxahatchee, Sierra Ferrell, Valerie June, Davíd Garza & Freaklórico, Haley Heynderickx, Tré Burt, Willie Watson and a number of very special guests. With the festival, the band aimed to bring a proper folk festival to their hometown and draw a line connecting the folk community from the collaborative Laurel Canyon scene of the 1960’s to the community of musicians and comedians working today at venues like L.A.’s Largo. The first annual iteration of the festival won accolades from Variety, KCRW, The Bluegrass Situation, The Orange County Register, WFMU, LAist and many more.
“Both of us have now lived enough life to understand that maybe one of the purposes we were put on Earth for is to sing together, to write songs together, to make music together,” notes guitarist/vocalist Kenneth Pattengale. “It has truly provided a direction for our lives.” Ryan adds, “It’s like a successful marriage in that there’s always been enough there between us collaboratively in the way that we work together, sing together, play together. It’s a very special thing. And I don’t think we ever took that for granted.”
